Being Brave takes guts!
The past two weeks have been pretty hectic for me and I have felt overwhelmed with excitement, happiness, exhaustion, pain and sadness. Yes – a mixed bunch of feelings…
I’ve had highs and lows.
Sad news from people I care about, painful days with an extremely sore tooth and the wonderful anticipation I’m having…looking forward to the dentist and my upcoming root canal.
As I am sure you know by now, ‘dissapointment takes adequate planning‘, so I am focusing on how easy and pleasant the experience will be 🙂
As well as recouperating after a bout of antibiotics from a swollen mouth – all this and the usual madness of my life with a busy family, crazy dog, clients, radio and last weekends shennanigans at the Brave Conference organised by the lovely Denise Whitmore 😉
I truly enjoyed the day, meeting old friends and making new ones and speaking about how to be Brave in both business and life.
It has me thinking since also…..
Being Brave is NOT lack of fear. It is feeling fear, understanding it, making it your friend and going forth through it and smashing it!
So I thought I would brave my fears of being judged and give you a laugh with this video of myself and my super buddy Denise Devlin! Let me entertain you!
Anyhow…. once you have finished rolling around laughing, I thought I would explain WHY I did that. You see I did that to SHOW you who I am. To be TRUE. To be ME and to SHARE this with YOU.
This is what I believe is the BRAVEST thing of all.
Stretch your BRAVE muscle as often as possible. You can do this by….
Making decisions quickly about small things, such as what to eat or wear.
Meet new people. Join a class or a social group. Come check out my Meetup HERE!
Eat something new. Cook. Bake a cake.
Learn a language, a new skill, a new hobby.
Speak to someone much older than you and really listen to what they say.
Speak to a child and really listen to what they say.
Listen without wanting to interrupt.
Speak to others from a different background, class, social circle, demographics.
Speak to someone you ‘think’ you dont like and look for what you do like.
Tell someone something you wouldn’t normally. Tell them a secret.
Tell someone why you are special. What is your gift.
Give someone a compliment, a genuine one. Look for their gifts.
Do someone a favour. Do a good deed.
Say Yes to something you wouldn’t normally.
Say No to something you would normally.
Go that 1 minute further in your routine than you thought you could.
Plan when you dont normally.
Don’t plan when you normally do.
Get up at a different time. Change the routine.
Read something outside your usual.
Listen to music outside your genre.
Paint, draw, sketch. Write a poem.
Go somewhere different every day. Walk a new route. Drive a different way.
Play with animals. Swim in the sea. Walk up a mountain.
NEVER make presumptions and keep an open mind!
There is a story I read in an Anthony De Mello book… it went like this –
A man found an eagles egg and put it in the nest of a bunch of farmyard chickens eggs. The eagle hatched with the brood of chicks and grew up with them.
All his life the eagle did what the chickens did. He scratched the earth for worms and insects. He clucked and cackled and he would trash his wings and fly a few feet in the air. Years passed and the eagle grew very old.
One day he saw a magnificent bird above him in the cloudless sky gliding majestically along the powerful wind currents. The old eagle looked up in awe.
‘Who’s that?’ he asked. ‘Thats the eagle, the king of the birds,’ said his neighbouring chicken. ‘He belongs to the sky. We belong to the earth- we’re chickens.’
So the eagle lived and died a chicken, for that’s what he thought he was.
Remember, what you think is not always the truth…
you are an eagle so go soar high today!
